THE LADY WITH THE DOG NOMINATED - BEST DIRECTOR - 1960 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL Based on one of Anton Chekhov’s loveliest, most wistful stories, this tale of a holiday affair begins as Moscow banker Dmitry spies a beautiful young woman, Anna, walking her dog in early 1900s Yalta. Each it turns out, is caught in a problematic marriage, yet each is reluctant to embark on an adventure that could turn their carefully controlled worlds upside down. After their summer holidays, both return home, but then a chance appears for Dmitry to make a trip to Anna’s home town. Was what they experienced a passing fancy - or a chance for more fulfilled lives? Director Iosif Khefitz creates a rich period portrait as well as a brilliant study of passion deferred, making his star-crossed couple complex, vital characters as well as representatives of their era.
